Woodward High School - Cincinnati, OH
Class Of 1965
POST THOUGHTS HERE ...
John and I reconnected through his nephew after many years. Always had great insight and worked with many neighbors in Fairfield helping them. Had some good conversations on electricity and devises. We both had taken up hobbies where we created things. His was wood working and mine was faceting gemstones. For a couple years I made him a few pieces before Christmas and mailed to him. My best friend as a child was killed outside his base, William Baker Hubble, so we connected a little on his time there. He had a great way to telling me about the geese flying onto the pond near him which he compared to their planes. And they do.
God bless his soul and you can rest now Johnny.

I remember that we were told Woodward was the "Oldest FREE Public High School west of the Alleghenies" Back then education was free to the 8th grade, which was unusual until years later.
Early 1800s Public Education: There was no standardized national system of free public education. Where it existed, it was locally funded, usually through taxes or charitable donations, and often only available to white male children.
• Grade Level: Education was usually free only for the most basic literacy and numeracy skills—reading, writing, and arithmetic. This often meant only a few years of schooling, generally ending around age 10 to 12, which aligns with about grade 3 or 4 by modern standards.
• Secondary Education: High school-level education (beyond grade 8) was not free and usually offered only through private academies or tuition-based institutions.
• Common School Movement: The push for free public education through 8th grade came later, especially under the influence of reformers like Horace Mann in the 1830s–1850s.
