School Story:

Working late one week night with the stage crew to set the lights for a play, I was running down a rear stairway by the Gym, when I heard the sound of a girl crying in sorrow. I slowed as I approached her, it was one of the cheer leaders sitting on the bottom step crying her heart out. I sat down next to her, not saying a word. She recognized me from English class, she sat behind me.

I gave her my clean handkerchief and just sat next to her quietly. I knew she'd speak when she was ready. After a few minutes, she asked "what are you doing?"

I answered simply, ""Helping you cry!"

She paused for a few seconds and then gave me a hug and started to explain. "I don't have a date for Friday night, and you guys treat me like I have a disease!"

I understood how she felt, she was one of the most beautiful girls in our grade! I explained the complicated and insecure thought processes of most guys, "First, most guys are intimidated by beauty, and you are the most beautiful girl in school!" Then, "Most guys are intimidated by smart girls and you are one of the most intelligent girls I know!"

She started to smile, as she listened and occasionally nodded her head in agreement as I continued.

"Most guys are intimidated by tall girls, and you are pretty tall. But, in my mind, that just means there is more of you to appreciate!" She was just an inch or two taller than me, but the only problem I saw was how to sneak in a kiss. I continued by telling her exactly how I felt about her and that I would be proud to take her to the Friday dance. I needed a date too!

She then broke out crying again and gave me a bigger hug! I gained a new friend that night, and we sat there for what seemed like forever talking about how girls and guys think and how often we make the wrong assumptions which cause hurt and pain. I drove her home in my trusty rusty Chevy Impala with the Radioshack reverb springs that gave my FM radio, tuned to WEBN, a "SPROING" sound from the rear speaker every time I drove over railroad tracks.

We both had a blast at the dance, but I will never forget that night on the stairway, and I've told this story to my children, and my children's children many times. I hope that someday they will have the same opportunity and choose wisely to listen and learn from someone, and just make life and the world a little brighter.

My Father once told me a very wise saying that I use frequently, "God made us each different for a reason. The challenge is to listen to, learn from and respect one another." His wisdom has served me well through out my life. So, I pass it on for all who pause to listen

My faith tells me that Irv simply has passed on to another part of his life, that his love and wisdom cannot die--we shall meet again!   I look forward to greeting Irv again, love cannot die and love was one of Irv's strongest blessings.  So, Irv, see ya!

I still have fond memories of Dottie.  Her warm smile and always friendly attitude toward all, but that was how our Class was!   I do believe strongly in our afterlife, and that we shall all meet again.  So, I will not say "Goodbye!", but will add a "See you later!"   I suspect that God put Dottie to work as soon as she finished newcomer orientation, probably welcoming and calming others to their new home.

So, God bless you Dottie, keep smiling and see you later!

So many fond memories, yet I realize that David's passing is but one more event that we all will have in common.  I susect that God actually felt David's pain and suffering, and that his passing was intended to end David's misery and not create more.  I also expect that someday, we shall all meet again, to smile, hug, and  share our continued life stories. Rest In Peace? No, not for David, God would not let David's powerful love for all go idle--too much work to be done!

My faith tells me that God didn't waste one minute puting David to work, using David's warm smile and huge heart, to greet and calm newcomers--directing them each to Newcomer Orientation.  I will be glad to shake David's hand, welcome his expected warm calming smile with understanding--that has always been David's way!  David lived to help others, always practicing the wisdom found in Mathew 5:41 "If anyone forces you to go one mile, go with them two miles".  :-)

See you,

Jim Myers
